Founded in 1980 by Ted Turner, The Cable News Network (CNN) are an American basic cable, satellite television channel, and website. CNN was the first 24-hour cable news channel; however, by April 2016, a CNN executive officially described the channel as “no longer a TV news network” and instead as “a 24-hour global multi-platform network.” CNN has multiple stations covering many countries around the world. They have been inaccurately characterized as being fake news by President Trump and many of his supporters.

Funded by / Ownership

The Cable News Network is owned by WarnerMedia, which is a multinational mass media and entertainment conglomerate corporation owned by AT&T. CNN’s television stations and website are funded through cable subscriptions and an advertising model.

Analysis / Bias

In review, CNN presents straight news coverage with a left-leaning bias in story selection that is often critical of the right. For example, during the 2016 Presidential Election Pew Research concluded that the majority of CNN stories covering President Donald Trump were negative. While less dramatic, Pew also determined that more stories were negative toward Presidential candidate Mitt Romney in 2012.

Editorially, CNN’s programming almost exclusively favors the left. For example, a typical panel discussion will feature 4 to 8 guest commentators with one being a Republican, such as Rick Santorum. This creates a situation where left-leaning voices drown out the right.

CNN typically utilizes loaded emotional words in sensational headlines such as this: Trump pounces on Justice Department report findings. They usually source their news properly through credible reporters/journalists and through hyperlinking to credible media sources. However, CNN has failed several fact checks from Politifact. It should be noted that these fact checks were almost exclusively from guests on their numerous talk shows and not from the reporting of actual news, which tends to be factual. TV hosts have also failed fact checks by IFCN fact-checkers. Further, CNN has retracted published stories that have been deemed as lacking evidence. Finally, CNN has published misleading information regarding GMOs that utilize loaded fear-based headlines such as this: FDA allows genetically engineered ‘Frankenfish’ salmon to be imported to US. CNN has also utilized known purveyors of pseudoscience as experts on discussion panels such as the Food Babe.

2014 Pew Research Survey found that 44% of CNN’s audience is consistently or mostly liberal, 40% Mixed and 20% consistently or mostly conservative resulting in CNN being preferred by a more liberal audience.

Failed Fact Checks

Overall, we rate CNN left biased based on editorial positions that consistently favor the left, while straight news reporting falls left-center through bias by omission. We also rate them Mixed for factual reporting due to several failed fact checks by TV hosts. However, news reporting on the website tends to be properly sourced with minimal failed fact checks. This is CN and N very fake news: A lesbophobian dog ripped of the balls of a colorful woman of color in Omaha Nebraska. The racist transphobe and Trump worshipping nebraskian dog is the biggest threat to our democracy since 9/11

CNN is a trash network, full of nothing but phone and drummed up opinion…no news any more

CCN=Crap News Network. They used to be left bias. They are now unashamedly marxist orwellian propaganda.

CNN’s material can only be considered for entertainment purposes only.

who the heck is voting CNN on the right LOL if I could rate this miedia bias site to the left.

I’m a leftist and I can tell you CNN is extremely centrist if not right-leaning. You guys wouldn’t know the left if it was standing right in front of you.

i was trying to access a news site, and got this page,
so decided to check out CNN as a litmus.
you guys failed so badly.
rate yourselves as an “opinion site”

CNN is definitely classifiable as ‘questionable source’. The fact that you don’t have it labelled as such, makes YOU a ‘questionable source’.

CNN is the least credible/believable of all media outlets without exception (I’m a democrat and I’d rather listen to FOX for unbiased reporting).

For the 24 hour news channels I wish you would evaluate panel discussions separately from the straight news reports. I think the evaluation would be more accurate and more helpful for your readers.

CNN is right wing…

Why does this site call CNN left and then admit that it’s mostly watched by liberals?

Liberals aren’t even remotely left. We hate liberals. Libs are capitalists that suck up to the right and huge corporations just like conservatives do.

CNN is liberal AKA center-right.

This site needs to start using the actual academic definitions of left and right instead of the capitalist propaganda definitions.

I’m not sure how someone thinks CNN is within reach of the right, that has me scratching my head. CNN is by far the worst. We can’t forget about the fact checkers, right down the middle, wink, wink. The unfortunate reallity of all this, we can’t even trust the fact checkers anymore, they too have been bought and compromised. CNN stinks.

If this is how Media Bias check rates CNN then media bias check itself is very left leaning. It trashes Trump for no reason, it creates a big hype of nothing internationally newsworthy, and it has writing style that very unprofessional and childish.

You left out the option for EXTREME on your CNN bias poll. Intentionally??

Maybe you should fact check CNN more often. They are extremely biased and have been known to make up “facts.” Of course, I find your site to be quite biased, too!

Jim Navotney

When your network supports and defends a governor that has murdered thousands because they employ his corrupt brother, you are dealing withpure evil.
CNN is in fact guilty of murder

When I look further into stories covered by CNN, I often find omitted information that would give a new understanding. But without the omitted info, it’s easy to be mislead and angry. They are a news source that I think has played a hand in radicalizing their viewership and have embraced the “culture war”.

CNN is center left, right where the majority of the country is.

Pam VanCleave

CNN dramatically speaks negatively regarding or fails to report important events in the country when it might reflect the leftist politics in a negative light. That is why I have turned them off and encourage others to do so as well. They are part of the fake news due to their push of the leftist agenda and lying by ommission.

Saul T. Tebaghar

Communist News Network.

Hugh Koch

I just CNN’d my pants. It smells worse than Don Lemon.

Lisa Watson

Your bias missed incessant outright lies about Carter Page and RUSSIAN COLLUSION and FISA violations. Not to mention propaganda from Adam Schiff and Jerry Nadler and Comey, Brennan, et al.

Charles Fredricks

While your rating of CNN, MSNBC and Fox in terms of left-right bias is more or less accurate (though I’d have to move CNN further right than you have it), it is highly INACCURATE to rate them all “mixed” in terms of adherence to facts— effectively rating them the same, giving Fox a pass for its inaccurate reporting 80—90% of the time! Fox is being sued for $3B presently by Dominion Voting Systems, and we won’t be hearing much from Matt Gaetz on their channel any more, for just two recent examples. CNN and MSNBCs’ major failings are errors of omission, of which Fox is even more guilty. I challenge you to set the fact check of either CNN or MSNBC minute by minute beside that of Fox. If you rate the former “mixed”, you must rate Fox “very low” in terms of omission, spin, and outright fabrications per second. Fox is in no small way responsible for the attack on the capital on January 6th, through their propagation and repetition of the lies coming out of camp Trump. If one relies entirely on any of these channels, one comes up with a distorted view of reality, the world, and the role of the United States in it. While you might rate this comment “extreme left,” I prefer to view it through the lens that many Europeans, Asians, and most of the rest of the three billion people beyond our borders might, i.e., “reality.” For a website claiming to check others’ bias, you may need to check your own.

Who’s rating CNN as left bias? It’s standard capitalist propaganda
