Analysis / Bias
The Center for Modern Health demonstrates a consistent right-leaning libertarian approach to healthcare policy. Its stated mission explicitly calls for reducing the size and influence of government in healthcare while expanding private markets, individual choice, competition, and voluntary exchange. This places it economically to the right of center, particularly on regulation, public insurance programs, and universal healthcare.
For example, Shaping Both the Big Debates and the Many Sub-Debates in Health Policy rejects universal coverage as the proper goal of health policy and argues that centralized programs and government regulation can restrict individual choice and innovation. Likewise, Profit-Driven Healthcare Hasn’t Failed Patients, But Regulation-Driven Healthcare Has argues that government intervention rather than the profit motive is a primary source of dysfunction in the U.S. healthcare system.
The organization also criticizes both Democratic and Republican healthcare interventions. For example, How Not to Sell Free-Market Healthcare Ideas criticizes the Trump administration’s healthcare proposal for failing to pursue meaningful free-market reform. This suggests its political orientation is driven more by libertarian economic principles than loyalty to a political party.
We also reviewed its treatment of vaccines because its emphasis on medical freedom and opposition to government mandates could potentially overlap with anti-vaccine advocacy. We found no evidence that CMH promotes vaccine misinformation or pseudoscience. Its references to vaccination primarily concern opposition to compulsory government mandates, while other material describes mRNA technologies positively. Articles generally cite academic research, government data, policy studies, and established medical literature.
