Funded by / Ownership
Aos Fatos is privately owned by founder Tai Nalon through a limited liability company registered in Rio de Janeiro. It is financially sustained through licensing agreements, technology and data services such as Radar Aos Fatos, transcription tools, sponsorship of innovation projects, and its membership program. Major funding support has come from philanthropic and tech-related initiatives, including the Google News Initiative, Meta, YouTube, the Heinrich Böll Foundation, and the International Center for Journalists. Aos Fatos explicitly avoids programmatic advertising and government funding, emphasizing transparency and independence. It is also a verified signatory of the IFCN Code of Principles.
Analysis / Bias
Aos Fatos presents itself as nonpartisan and adheres to international fact-checking standards; however, its editorial emphasis appears to lean toward progressive, pro-democratic narratives. Fact-checks often counter right-wing disinformation in Brazil, such as clarifying distortions about the “Gag Bill” protecting children online or correcting climate denial claims that Antarctic ice gain disproves climate change.
Its framing sometimes challenges conservative actors, including Jair Bolsonaro supporters, and it defends Brazilian court actions against misinformation in its critique of a U.S. State Department report on censorship. While stories are thoroughly sourced with official data, scientific studies, and direct documents, the selection of topics and tone tends to align with left-leaning, pro-regulation, and pro-democracy values.
