History

Al Ittihad is an Arabic-language Emirati newspaper and website based in Abu Dhabi. According to its About Us page, the newspaper first published on October 20, 1969, during the period leading up to the formation of the United Arab Emirates. The name “Al Ittihad,” meaning “The Union,” reflects its historical role in promoting national unity and the UAE state project. The outlet began as a weekly publication before becoming a daily newspaper in 1972 and later expanding into sports, culture, print, and digital platforms. Al Ittihad was also one of the first UAE newspapers to launch a website, entering online publishing in 1996.

Funded by / Ownership

Al Ittihad is fully owned by Abu Dhabi Media Company, a state-owned media company in the United Arab Emirates. Abu Dhabi Media identifies Al Ittihad as part of its media network, and the site’s terms also identify Abu Dhabi Media Company as the operator of Al Ittihad. Revenue is generated through state ownership, advertising, digital platforms, and related media services. Because the UAE government maintains extensive legal and regulatory control over domestic media, ownership and editorial independence are limited. Reporters Without Borders states that independent media do not operate freely in the UAE and that dissenting voices face severe restrictions.

Analysis / Bias

Al Ittihad’s editorial position is strongly pro-government and aligned with the policies and public messaging of the UAE leadership. On MBFC’s standard left-right scale, this is best categorized as Right-Center due to the UAE’s conservative monarchical political structure, state-aligned media system, emphasis on national unity, and support for official economic, diplomatic, security, and social policy priorities.

Domestic coverage frequently reads like official state communication. For example, Hamdan bin Zayed chairs the second meeting of the Board of Directors of the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi in 2026 relies on official UAE government language and the state news agency WAM. The article praises leadership initiatives, environmental achievements, sustainability goals, and institutional performance without critical scrutiny or opposing perspectives.

Regional and international coverage generally follows official UAE diplomatic framing and avoids criticism of the UAE government or ruling families. For example, New high death toll from Israeli airstrikes on Lebanon on Friday reports casualty figures from Lebanon’s Ministry of Health and the official National News Agency. This story is factual in structure but relies heavily on official regional sources.

In international reporting, In a first, Türkiye begins exporting warships is sourced to AFP and presented in a straightforward wire-style format. This shows that Al Ittihad can publish factual international reporting, especially when relying on wire agencies.

Overall, factual accuracy is strongest in routine international, business, and official news coverage. However, the outlet’s state ownership, lack of criticism of UAE authorities, heavy reliance on official narratives, and the country’s restrictive media environment support a Mixed factual rating rather than High. Readers should expect accurate reporting on many events but limited independence and significant self-censorship on politically sensitive topics.
