Pew Report Shows Declining Engagement with Local News and Shift to Digital Sources

A new Pew Research Center fact sheet highlights a continued decline in Americans’ engagement with local news, with only 21% of U.S. adults saying they follow it very closely in 2025, down from 37% in 2016. While traditional sources like local TV and newspapers remain widely used, their reach is shrinking as digital alternatives grow. Online-only news sources have seen the sharpest increase, more than doubling since 2018. Social media, forums, and even local government communications are becoming more prominent sources. Despite 80% of Americans still viewing local news as important to their communities, only 12% report paying for it, with most citing free availability as the main reason.
