FALSE Claim by Michael Whatley: Former North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper “bears direct responsibility” for the fatal stabbing of a woman on the Charlotte rail system.

Politifact rating: False (Whatley cited criminal justice reforms recommended by a task force Cooper created in 2020. The Charlotte stabbing suspect was released from prison before the task force published its recommendations. There’s also no evidence the recommendations played a role in the suspect’s release from jail earlier this year.)

TRUE Claim via Social Media: U.S. President Donald Trump ordered the nation’s flags to fly at half-staff following the shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk in September 2025, but not after the fatal shooting of Democratic Minnesota Rep. Melissa Hortman in June 2025.

Snopes rating: True (Further, Presidents often call state or local officials in the wake of such events. After Hortman was shot, Trump referred to Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as “whacked out,” and said he would not call because, “Why waste time?”
