Anthropic Seeks Appeal in Copyright Lawsuit Over Pirated Books
AI company Anthropic is pushing for a federal appeals court to weigh in on whether using pirated books to train its language model, Claude, qualifies as fair use. While Judge William Alsup previously ruled that the use of legally purchased books was protected, he rejected fair use claims regarding pirated content. Anthropic argues that the distinction between authorized and unauthorized sources shouldn’t affect fair use status, especially given conflicting rulings in similar cases, such as one involving Meta.
