Tech Industry Sues to Block Georgia Social Media Restrictions

NetChoice, a tech industry group representing companies such as Meta, Google, and Snap, has filed a lawsuit to block Georgia’s new “Protecting Georgia’s Children on Social Media Act.” Signed into law by Governor Brian Kemp, the statute mandates age verification for users and parental consent for minors under 16 to create accounts on social platforms. It also bans targeting ads to these minors using personal data, excluding age and location. NetChoice argues the law violates the First Amendment by burdening free speech and editorial judgment and failing to define critical terms like “advertising” and “personal information.” The group is seeking an injunction to stop enforcement ahead of the law’s July implementation. Paramount and Trump Begin Mediation Over Defamation Lawsuit

California Senate Committee Advances Media Protection Bill

California lawmakers have advanced SB 690, a bill aimed at shielding media outlets and other businesses from privacy lawsuits related to standard digital practices. Sponsored by Senator Anna Caballero (D-Merced), the bill closes a legal loophole in the 1967 California Invasion of Privacy Act. If passed, it would exempt certain data processing from privacy law restrictions and apply retroactively to cases pending as of January 1, 2026. The bill now proceeds to further legislative review.
