Pew Research Center’s Survey on Journalistic Traits Valued by Americans


A Pew Research Center survey reveals that while most Americans don’t prioritize sharing personal traits with journalists, political alignment is the most valued characteristic. The survey, involving 10,701 U.S. adults, indicates that 39% find it somewhat important for journalists to share their political views, a sentiment echoed almost equally by Republicans and Democrats. This preference is particularly strong among conservative Republicans and liberal Democrats.

Younger adults show a greater inclination for journalists to match their age and gender compared to older demographics. Racial and ethnic considerations are significant among Black Americans, with 41% valuing racial congruence in journalists, a higher rate than other groups.

Religious affiliation also influences preferences, with Protestants and religiously affiliated individuals more likely to value shared religious views in journalists than Catholics or the unaffiliated.
