History

ZN.UA, also known as Mirror Weekly or Dzerkalo Tyzhnia, is a Ukrainian news and analysis publication founded in 1994. It was originally a weekly newspaper and transitioned to an online-focused publication after ending its print edition in 2019.

The editor-in-chief is Yulia Mostova, who has led the publication since 2011.

Funded by / Ownership

ZN.UA is published by ZN UA LLC. Independent Ukrainian media reporting identifies ownership through ZN Group LLC by Yulia Mostova, Volodymyr Mostovyi, and Oleksii Mostovyi.

According to its editorial policy, revenue comes from grants, reader contributions, and advertising. The outlet states that it does not accept Ukrainian government funding and has no oligarch ownership. Its donation page also solicits direct reader support.

Analysis / Bias

ZN.UA combines conventional news reporting with extensive analysis and commentary. Its editorial mission emphasizes democracy, government accountability, anti-corruption efforts, human rights, civil society, and Ukraine’s integration into European institutions.

Straight-news reporting is generally well sourced. For example, Trump signs executive order establishing US Space Academy relies primarily on Reuters and presents the proposal without significant ideological commentary.

Likewise, its report on the deaths following a Russian drone strike in Myla attributes information directly to Ukraine’s Security Service, Interior Ministry, and other officials while noting questions about why ammunition was stored near residential areas.

Opinion content spans different ideological perspectives. In Protecting against homelessness at someone else’s expense, the author argues from a property-rights and market-oriented perspective that government should not transfer social-welfare obligations onto private landlords and lenders.

The outlet is strongly pro-Ukrainian in its coverage of Russia’s invasion, but it also regularly scrutinizes Ukraine’s government and institutions. This is better understood as a national and democratic orientation than a conventional left-right bias.

The Institute of Mass Information included ZN.UA in its 2026 list of transparent and responsible Ukrainian media, based on adherence to journalistic standards, transparency, integrity, and advertising disclosure.

Ukraine’s wartime media environment warrants some caution. Reporters Without Borders ranks Ukraine 55th of 180 countries in 2026 and notes wartime reporting restrictions, pressure on journalists, and serious security threats, while also describing the independent media sector as diverse and resilient.
