History

Founded in 1984, The Yankee Institute for Public Policy is a free market, limited government American think tank based in Hartford, Connecticut, that researches Connecticut public policy questions. According to their about page “Yankee Institute develops and advances free-market, limited-government solutions in Connecticut. As one of America’s oldest state-based think tanks, Yankee is a leading advocate for smart, limited government; fairness for taxpayers; and an open road to opportunity.” The current President is Carol Platt Liebau.

The Yankee Institute is a nonprofit 501(c)(3). Funding is derived from donations, however they do not disclose donors.

Analysis / Bias

In review, the website is broken down into three categories: News, Issues and Research. Under the News tab the Yankee Institute covers news related to Connecticut. There is minimal use of loaded language such as this: Federal Government Blocks Union Dues Deduction from Home Healthcare Workers’ Paychecks. This article and all others are properly sourced to credible media outlets. Under the Issues tab they link to current campaigns such as Connecticut can Work, which advocates for “reforms that will make it easier to hire and work in our state, at no cost to taxpayers.” Finally, under the Reports section they list scorecards for the Connecticut Legislature. In general, the Yankee Institute advocates for limited government, Libertarian leaning policies.
