Analysis / Bias
The World Happiness Report is a research publication focused on measuring subjective well-being across countries using global survey data. Its rankings are primarily based on the Cantril Self-Anchoring Striving Scale from the Gallup World Poll, in which respondents rate their lives on a ladder scale from 0 to 10 as described in the FAQ page.
For example, the chapter Caring and Sharing: Global Analysis of Happiness and Kindness analyzes trends in benevolent acts such as volunteering and helping strangers using international survey data. The report frequently explores correlations between well-being and social factors such as trust, generosity, and public policy measures, drawing on large datasets collected from over 100,000 respondents across more than 140 countries.
Additionally, the article “Leading experts to examine the impact of social media in World Happiness Report 2026” outlines upcoming research on links between social media use and global well-being.
Overall, the publication presents academic research rather than traditional journalism and relies heavily on large-scale survey data and contributions from economists, psychologists, and social scientists. While the research occasionally aligns with policy discussions around well-being and social development, it primarily reflects scholarly analysis rather than ideological commentary.
