History

WelcomeStack is a political analysis and commentary publication produced by Welcome, an organization of centrist Democrats focused on electing candidates in competitive districts, reducing political polarization, and expanding the Democratic Party’s appeal among moderate and independent voters.

According to its About page, WelcomeStack began as a weekly newsletter reflecting on the organization’s political work and developed into what it calls the “front page of the center-left.” Its contributors include Welcome co-founders Lauren Harper Pope and Liam Kerr, political director Dan Conway, political analyst Ruy Teixeira, and The Long View editor-in-chief Michael Baharaeen.

Welcome’s political operation includes WelcomePAC, which was launched during the 2022 election cycle to direct resources toward Democratic candidates in competitive districts that the organization believes are neglected by traditional Democratic fundraising networks. WelcomePAC is registered with the Federal Election Commission.

Welcome also organizes WelcomeFest, an annual gathering of centrist and moderate Democrats. Politico described the 2025 conference as a gathering where moderate Democrats argued that the party should emphasize pragmatic policies, ideological flexibility, and greater appeal to swing voters.

WelcomeStack is published by the Welcome political organization and is closely connected to WelcomePAC. WelcomePAC is a federally registered political action committee that supports Democratic candidates, particularly those running in competitive, Republican-leaning, and swing congressional districts.

The broader organization is funded through political contributions and supporter donations, while WelcomeStack generates additional revenue through paid Substack subscriptions. Welcome states that its supporter network has invested millions of dollars in candidates and political causes.

WelcomePAC also raises money specifically to direct contributions toward Democratic candidates it considers strong general-election prospects. Its fundraising materials explicitly state that its objective is to “elect Democrats” and defeat Republicans while reducing what it views as inefficient Democratic political spending.

WelcomeStack also publishes podcasts and specialized newsletters, including Winner Winner and The Depolarizers.

Analysis / Bias

WelcomeStack has an explicitly center-left Democratic perspective. Unlike progressive or socialist Democratic publications, however, its editorial focus is frequently critical of the party’s left wing and argues that Democrats must moderate their positions to win competitive elections.

In AOC and the Democratic Reckoning Over the “Great Awokening”, Michael Baharaeen criticizes Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and other progressives for failing to fully reckon with what he describes as the excesses of the 2020-era progressive movement. The article cites numerous documented controversies involving cancel culture, policing, immigration, race, and progressive activism while arguing that some Democratic positions became substantially more liberal than the electorate.

The piece is politically opinionated but extensively sourced, linking to The New York Times, NBC News, PBS, Persuasion, FIRE, and other identifiable sources. Its ideological direction is notable because it attacks the Democratic left from within the Democratic coalition rather than adopting conservative positions wholesale.

Similarly, Progressives and Republicans Agree on the Least Electable Democrats argues that Republican groups deliberately spent money to help nominate progressive Democratic candidates whom they considered easier to defeat in general elections. The underlying premise is supported by FEC filings and contemporary reporting documenting Republican-aligned spending in Democratic primaries. The article’s interpretation, that moderate candidates are generally more electable, is more explicitly political and reflects Welcome’s organizational mission. Welcome’s broader work consistently argues that Democratic resources are often misallocated toward safe districts and ideologically progressive candidates rather than competitive races.

In The Four Types of Democratic Primary Voters, Liam Kerr divides Democratic voters according to ideology and their willingness to prioritize electability. The analysis openly favors moderate Democrats and what Kerr calls the “Strategic Left,” progressive voters willing to support more centrist nominees when doing so improves the party’s chances of winning. The article draws from polling and analysis by Third Way, NBC News, the Manhattan Institute, Gallup, The Liberal Patriot, and other sources.

WelcomeStack’s editorial position is therefore unusual compared with many partisan Democratic publications. It favors Democratic electoral victories and generally accepts center-left social and economic assumptions, but regularly criticizes democratic socialism, ideological purity, “woke” politics, progressive advocacy groups, and candidates it considers too liberal for their districts.

Welcome also praises Democrats such as Jared Golden and other politicians who distance themselves from national Democratic positions when representing conservative constituencies. For example, its analysis has defended Joe Manchin’s moderation as electorally necessary in West Virginia.

The publication also clearly separates itself from political neutrality. WelcomePAC’s stated purpose is to help Democrats win elections, and WelcomeStack frequently analyzes politics from the perspective of what Democrats should do to gain or retain governing majorities.

Bias therefore derives mainly from its Democratic electoral mission and center-left political assumptions rather than loaded rhetoric or misinformation.
