History

The San Antonio Report, originally named The Rivard Report, was founded in 2012 by Robert Rivard and Monika Maeckle. It started as a blog and evolved into a daily digital news source focusing on issues and personalities in San Antonio, Texas. According to its about page, “The San Antonio Report is San Antonio’s leading local online news source. As a reader-supported nonprofit newsroom, our coverage is never behind a paywall, and we are able to publish without any obligation to outside owners or interests.”

Funded by / Ownership

The San Antonio Report is operated by a nonprofit organization of the same name. The organization has received donations from John and Florence Newman Foundation, with other significant donors including the Charles Butt Foundation, the Tobin Endowment, and H-E-B, a Texas-based grocery store chain. The organization also generates revenue through advertising and sponsored content. It discloses its donors, with their contribution amounts or ranges, on its Membership pages for both individual and institutional contributors​.

Analysis / Bias

The website reports on San Antonio and the surrounding area, providing comprehensive coverage of local elections, educational challenges, business developments, and health issues, including the COVID-19 pandemic. It also features special reports and offers content in both English and Spanish. Additionally, it publishes news from The Texas Tribune, another nonprofit news site​.

San Antonio Report generally relies on original reporting, including interviews with local officials and experts. News articles and reports typically do not use loaded emotional language like this Immigrant rights groups sue Texas to halt new law allowing arrests of migrants.
