RIGHT BIAS

These media sources are moderately to strongly biased toward conservative causes through story selection and/or political affiliation. Some sources in this category may be untrustworthy. See all Right Bias sources.

  • Overall, we rate the National Taxpayers Union (NTU) as Right Biased based on strong alignment with Republican tax policy, a uniformly conservative legislative agenda, and partisan lobbying. It earns a Mostly Factual rating due to a lack of failed fact checks and generally credible research, but its ideological tone and selective framing reduce its neutrality.

History

Founded in 1969, the National Taxpayers Union (NTU) is a “nonpartisan organization working for lower taxes, limited government, and economic freedom at all levels.” It advocates for fiscal conservatism, reduced government spending, and regulatory reform. According to its About page, NTU is closely affiliated with its educational arm, the National Taxpayers Union Foundation (NTUF).

NTU and NTUF are based in Washington, D.C., and regularly publish reports, track legislation, and engage in policy advocacy.

Funded by / Ownership

NTU is a nonprofit 501(c)(4) organization, and its companion arm, NTUF, is a 501(c)(3). Its 2023 Annual Report discloses donors such as the Sarah Scaife Foundation and support from corporate and private sources.

According to OpenSecrets, NTU spends 100% of its political contributions on Republican candidates, with over $1.3 million in lobbying expenditures since 1998, detailed further in its lobbying profile. This confirms a clear ideological and partisan preference despite the group’s nonpartisan branding.

Analysis / Bias

NTU consistently promotes fiscally conservative positions and frequently aligns with Republican legislative goals. It strongly supports President Donald Trump’s tax policies, notably advocating for the permanence of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) in this article, using favorable framing of Trump-era policy.

On climate-related issues, NTU echoes right-leaning economic messaging by criticizing the cancellation of the Keystone XL pipeline, emphasizing job loss over environmental impact in this editorial.

Despite this ideological framing, NTU’s research and foundation work maintain high credibility. Reports like this study on tax season costs and this analysis on tax code complexity are data-driven, well-sourced, and methodologically sound. The line between advocacy and analysis is delineated on their site.

Overall, NTU blends credible economic reporting through its foundation with strong, right-leaning editorial bias in its policy advocacy.
