Funded by / Ownership

NBR is privately owned by Todd and Jackie Scott and is based in Fiji. The publication does not feature advertising and generates revenue primarily through subscriptions. The owners took over the management of NBR in 2012 and completed their acquisition from the previous owner, Barry Colman, in 2020.

Analysis / Bias

NBR is known for its focus on business and economic news, often presenting detailed and analytical articles on these topics. The publication’s language is generally neutral and professional, aimed at providing factual and objective reporting.

One example is the article “Political disputes on climate policy not helping investment,” which discusses the impact of political disagreements on climate policy on investment.  Edwards notes that while major political parties may agree on the broad structure of climate change policy, they differ on the details. The article uses neutral language and cites various industry experts, such as The Sustainable Business Council and Climate Leaders Coalition, representing 160 businesses.

Another example is the article “Financial Promise and NZ in Global Rankings,” which examines New Zealand’s position in global financial rankings. The article presents data and expert opinions to support its analysis while maintaining a generally neutral tone.

NBR tends to focus on issues relevant to the business community and investors, with a slight emphasis on market-friendly policies and economic growth. However, it does not overtly favor any particular political ideology, and its reporting is fact-based.
