Funded by / Ownership
MRC Free Speech America operates under the larger umbrella of the Media Research Center (MRC), a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization based in Virginia, which means it is tax-exempt and relies on donations to fund its operations. Charlie Kirk, Newt Gingrich, Bill Walton, and David Bozell serve on the board of advisors.
Analysis / Bias
MRC Free Speech America consistently demonstrates a strong conservative bias through its choice of stories, language use, and political affiliations. The outlet frequently targets George Soros, criticizing the activities and publications of organizations funded by his Open Society Foundations.
MRC publishes reports often portraying these outlets as promoting radical and dystopian views. Also, they publish articles such as “George Soros-Fueled $80M+ Groups Calling for Big Tech Censorship,” which criticizes George Soros and frames his support of tech regulation groups as a direct attack on conservative speech. The headline itself is loaded with negative connotations toward Soros and suggests a deliberate and sinister agenda against conservatives.
Charlie Kirk, an advisory board member of MRC Free Speech, and other conservative figures often promote various conspiracy theories about George Soros. Depicting him as a puppet master behind global events, such as funding migrant caravans to influence U.S. elections. Another frequent claim is that Soros finances Antifa to destabilize American society, especially during the 2020 Black Lives Matter protests. Kirk also accuses Soros of manipulating elections by financing liberal organizations, alleging election fraud in the 2020 presidential election.
Additionally, Kirk promotes other conspiracy theories, such as the Great Reset, which he discusses in this YouTube video. These claims lack substantial evidence and are widely discredited by reputable fact-checkers.
Similarly, the article “39 Times Facebook Interfered in US Elections” compiles instances where Facebook’s actions are portrayed as biased against conservative viewpoints. The language used in these articles often includes charged terms such as “censorship,” “interference,” and “anti-Americanism,” which are intended to evoke strong reactions from a conservative audience.
The articles often reference conservative sources or other divisions of the MRC, such as NewsBusters, which could lead to an echo chamber effect where information is repeatedly reinforced without external verification. There is limited engagement with the least biased or liberal sources, which could affect the overall credibility.
In general, MRC Free Speech America is a conservative media watchdog that documents and challenges major tech companies’ perceived censorship of conservative voices. The site exhibits a strong conservative bias through its story selection, loaded language, and political affiliations.
