History
Mimikama is an Austrian nonprofit fact-checking and digital-literacy organization founded in 2011. Its legal name is Mimikama – Verein zur Aufklärung über Internetmissbrauch, or Association for Education About Internet Abuse.
According to its About page, Mimikama began by investigating hoaxes, false reports, scams, and internet fraud circulating on social media. Its work has since expanded to include political disinformation, manipulated images and video, artificial intelligence-generated content, online fraud, conspiracy theories, and media-literacy education.
The organization is based in Vienna, Austria. Tom Wannenmacher is its founder, chairman, and editor-in-chief. Andre Wolf serves as spokesperson and works with Mimikama Education, while additional staff cover research, editorial work, community engagement, and educational programs.

Funded by / Ownership
Mimikama is owned and operated by the nonprofit association Mimikama – Verein zur Aufklärung über Internetmissbrauch. According to its transparency page, the association itself is the media owner and publisher.
Funding comes primarily from individual donations, memberships through platforms such as Steady, and paid educational services including workshops, lectures, consulting, and other programs offered through Mimikama Education. The organization is also developing paid digital educational products.
Mimikama states that it does not accept funding for editorial content from political parties, political organizations, lobby groups, government agencies, major technology companies, or advertisers. An older FAQ notes one exception in 2017, when it worked with Austria’s education ministry to produce media-literacy materials.
Analysis / Bias
Mimikama primarily publishes fact-checks, scam warnings, media-literacy content, and explanatory reporting on misinformation circulating on Facebook, TikTok, Telegram, WhatsApp, X, and other digital platforms.
Its methodology states that fact-checking begins by identifying the original claim and its context, followed by source research that emphasizes primary documents, official data, direct statements, and independent corroboration. Mimikama does not generally rate unverifiable opinions, obvious satire, or claims lacking meaningful circulation.
The organization also publishes detailed source guidelines. These state that screenshots without provenance, anonymous forwarded messages, AI-generated answers, popularity, and single uncorroborated statements are not considered sufficient evidence. Mimikama states that primary sources are preferred but that even official sources should be independently checked when appropriate.
Fact checks use clearly defined conclusions such as Richtig (True), Irreführend (Misleading), and Falsch (False). Articles routinely link directly to supporting documentation and competing evidence so that readers can verify the conclusions themselves.
Mimikama also maintains a formal corrections policy. Substantive errors are corrected with visible notices, while major corrections that affect an article’s core conclusion are explicitly identified. For example, a 2025 article concerning false claims about Brigitte Macron and Michelle Obama includes a dated correction explaining exactly what wording was changed.
Politically, we found no consistent evidence that Mimikama favors left- or right-leaning parties or ideologies. Its fact checks target misinformation based primarily on verifiability and circulation rather than political affiliation. For example, it has debunked fabricated statements attributed to Donald Trump while also addressing false or misleading claims originating from other ideological directions.
Mimikama reports that NewsGuard awarded it a 100/100 trust score based on journalistic criteria including sourcing, corrections, ownership, and funding transparency. While such outside ratings do not make an outlet infallible, they support the site’s strong transparency practices.
In general, Mimikama demonstrates strong sourcing, transparent methodology, clear ownership and funding disclosures, named staff, and a visible corrections process.
