History

Maine Policy Institute (MPI) is a nonprofit public-policy think tank based in Portland, Maine. Founded in 2002 as the Maine Heritage Policy Center, it adopted its current name in 2020. MPI advocates for limited government, free markets, lower taxes, individual liberty, education choice, and reduced regulation.

The organization conducts policy research, publishes commentary, testifies before the Maine Legislature, and advocates for specific legislation and public-policy reforms. Matthew Gagnon serves as Chief Executive Officer.

Analysis / Bias

Maine Policy Institute publishes research and commentary from a strongly free-market, libertarian, and socially conservative perspective. Economically, MPI advocates lower taxes, reduced government spending, deregulation, right-to-work policies, school choice, market-oriented healthcare, and opposition to the expansion of government programs.
