History

JTBC News is the news division of JTBC, a South Korean nationwide cable television network launched in 2011. JTBC is part of the JoongAng Group and is affiliated with the historically conservative JoongAng Ilbo. Despite this ownership background, JTBC News has developed a reputation for investigative journalism and relatively independent reporting within South Korea’s polarized media environment. The outlet gained major prominence during coverage of the 2016–2017 impeachment scandal involving former President Park Geun-hye. JTBC is also certified by the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN) through its dedicated fact-checking division.

Analysis / Bias

JTBC News demonstrates a Center-Left bias overall. While it frequently reports factually and performs strong investigative journalism, editorial framing and story selection often favor liberal or reform-oriented perspectives in South Korean politics.

For example, Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission overturns ‘attack conclusion’… Criticism asks, “Is this grounds to force withdrawal of indictment?” provides extensive context favorable to President Lee Jae-myung while still including criticism from the conservative People Power Party. The article largely frames the earlier investigation as politically flawed while giving sympathetic treatment to Lee’s remarks regarding political persecution.

In international coverage, ‘Clash’ Again Even During Ceasefire… Trump Expects Negotiations, Says “Answer from Iran Will Come” reports on U.S.-Iran tensions in a mostly factual manner, though wording occasionally reflects subtle skepticism toward Donald Trump, such as describing his response as a “typical Trump-style evasion strategy.”

JTBC’s IFCN-certified fact-checking division generally adheres to evidence-based reporting standards. For instance, [Fact Check] Was Judge Shin Jong-oh facing the Daejang-dong case appeal trial? methodically debunks online conspiracy claims through court records and documented evidence.

Overall, JTBC tends to support institutional accountability, anti-corruption investigations, civil liberties, and socially liberal positions more often than conservative narratives, placing it slightly left of center within South Korea’s media landscape.
