Funded by / Ownership

The Independent Petroleum Association of America (IPAA) is a nonprofit trade association funded by membership dues, sponsorships, and event revenue. It also manages the IPAA Wildcatters Fund, a political action committee (PAC) that only accepts voluntary contributions from its members and cannot accept corporate donations or public contributions. IPAA does not publicly disclose detailed financial information or individual donors.

Analysis / Bias

IPAA’s content consistently advances a pro-industry agenda, emphasizing the economic benefits of oil and gas while downplaying environmental or regulatory concerns. For instance, in its press release titled “IPAA Responds to President’s Comments on Climate and Energy in State of the Union,” the organization accuses President Biden of “ignoring American energy leadership” and creating “failed government subsidies for wind, solar, and electric vehicles…” The release does not mention environmental or climate-related risks and frames regulation as a threat to American energy security.

IPAA also maintains a public stance against steel and aluminum tariffs, arguing that such policies raise costs for producers. Its communications consistently highlight industry benefits while omitting environmental tradeoffs or alternative perspectives.

Across its official publications, IPAA sources mainly from internal communications, member testimony, and industry-aligned positions. Counterpoints from environmental groups, scientists, or public health advocates are largely absent, contributing to an ideologically narrow presentation.
