Analysis / Bias
The Greenwald Substack publishes investigative commentary and opinion focused on national security, media criticism, foreign policy, and civil liberties. Early in his career, Greenwald was widely associated with a civil-libertarian and anti-interventionist perspective often aligned with the political left. His reporting on the NSA surveillance program and criticism of the Bush administration’s War on Terror helped establish his reputation as a prominent critic of government surveillance and national security expansion.
Over time, Greenwald’s focus increasingly shifted toward criticism of what he describes as the “liberal establishment,” corporate media organizations, and U.S. intelligence agencies. Following his departure from The Intercept in 2020, after a dispute with editors regarding an article critical of then-presidential candidate Joe Biden, Greenwald began publishing independently on Substack and expanded his media presence through podcasts and television appearances. He has also appeared frequently on Fox News programs, including segments with Tucker Carlson, which critics cite as evidence of a perceived shift toward right-leaning media environments.
The content on the Substack often reflects a broad anti-establishment orientation rather than strict ideological alignment with a traditional political party. Some articles maintain positions commonly associated with the political left, such as opposition to military intervention and skepticism toward corporate power. For example, the article Trump Starts a Major Regime-Change War with Iran, Serving Neoconservatism and Israel criticizes U.S. foreign policy interventionism and the influence of neoconservative policy agendas. Other articles focus heavily on criticism of mainstream media institutions and Democratic Party politics, such as Support for Israel in the US Has Collapsed, Radically — and Finally — Opening the Debate, which argues that American political attitudes toward Israel are changing.
Due to this approach, Greenwald’s work often attracts audiences across the anti-establishment political spectrum. Critics argue that his more recent commentary frequently aligns with populist or conservative narratives, particularly when criticizing mainstream media, intelligence agencies, and Democratic political institutions. Supporters, however, maintain that his reporting reflects a consistent civil-libertarian philosophy emphasizing free speech, skepticism of government power, and opposition to foreign intervention rather than a traditional partisan shift.
