Funded by / Ownership
Factcheck Lab was founded and initially funded by the Culture and Media Education Foundation Limited (CMEF), a Hong Kong–registered tax-exempt charity. In April 2022, operational control was transferred to the Media Literacy Research Center Limited (MLRC), which now independently manages Factcheck Lab. Funding sources, governance structure, and editorial independence policies are publicly disclosed on its About page.
Analysis / Bias
Factcheck Lab is a documentation-first fact-checking organization that has been a certified signatory to the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN) Code of Principles since October 2021. For example, in its investigation into false images circulated following the death of Alex Pretti, Factcheck Lab conducted reverse image searches and corroborated findings using multiple independent fact-checkers in this report. The analysis confirmed that the circulating images were either digitally altered or depicted entirely different individuals.
Similarly, Factcheck Lab debunked a viral video claiming to show two failed Chinese rocket launches by identifying reused footage from Russian and U.S. launches in this verification, citing archival footage from BBC News, AFP Fact Check, and NASA. In another case, the outlet determined that a video allegedly showing a woman arrested in Tiananmen Square for waving a Republic of China flag was AI-generated, based on visual inconsistencies and watermark analysis detailed in this fact check.
Across these reports, Factcheck Lab consistently relies on primary documents, reverse-image searches, archived pages, and corroboration from established outlets, maintaining a neutral tone and avoiding editorial speculation.
