Fact Check: Was Crystal Mason imprisoned because of Ken Paxton’s crackdown on voters of color?

Media Bias Fact Check (MBFC) publishes daily vetted fact checks from verified IFCN-approved sources. Each claim is independently reviewed for accuracy and context.

Claimant: James Talarico campaign

Claim: Crystal Mason was sentenced to five years in prison for illegal voting “because of Ken Paxton’s crackdown on voters of color.”

Rating: MISLEADING

Explanation: Mason was prosecuted by the Tarrant County District Attorney’s Office, not Paxton’s office, and the judge did not explain why she received a five-year sentence. Although Paxton separately pursued voter-fraud cases that disproportionately involved Black and Latino defendants, the available evidence does not establish that his crackdown caused Mason’s prosecution or sentence.
