History

Eleza Fact is the fact-checking arm of Eleza DRC, a legally registered ASBL founded in 2021 to counter the severe impact of disinformation on security, public health, and social stability in the Democratic Republic of Congo. As outlined in Who Are We, its mission is to verify misleading content circulating on platforms such as Facebook, X, WhatsApp, and YouTube, with a team of 12 journalists working across multiple provinces.

Funded by / Ownership

Eleza DRC provides full funding transparency on its Financing page. The organization receives no political or governmental funding. Its operations are supported through $7,000 in member contributions, approximately $15,000 annually from Meta’s “trusted partner” program, and €46,000 from Free Press Unlimited for reliable information initiatives in North Kivu and Ituri. Eleza Fact is also an IFCN-certified fact-checker, as verified on its IFCN profile.

Analysis / Bias

Eleza Fact’s work is consistently nonpartisan and evidence-driven. Its fact-check “False, this supposed photo of Gloria Bash in a bikini is an image generated by artificial intelligence” demonstrates a transparent investigative process combining testimony from the subject with technical verification tools, including Hive Moderation and Fake Image Detector. The tone remains factual and avoids interpretive or political commentary.

Similarly, the report “False, the Ministers of Culture and Sports of the DRC did not offer $3 million in funding for the Fally Ipupa concert” uses ministry statements, archived posts, interviews, and legal criteria for cultural funding to methodically debunk a viral claim. The story selection reflects public-interest priorities rather than ideological framing, with a particular focus on misinformation that may lead to public unrest.

Throughout these checks, Eleza’s methodology adheres closely to IFCN principles: sourcing is explicit, verification steps are documented, and the organization avoids political inference. This creates a high degree of transparency and neutrality.

Failed Fact Check

  • None in the Last 5 years. They are an IFCN fact-checker.

Overall, we rate Eleza Fact Least Biased based on consistently neutral, evidence-based fact-checking. We also rate them High for factual reporting due to transparent sourcing, IFCN accreditation, and rigorous verification practices. (D. Van Zandt 12/10/2025)
