Funded by / Ownership

EFE Verifica is part of Agencia EFE, S.A.U., wholly owned by the State Society of Industrial Holdings (SEPI), under Spain’s Ministry of Finance and Public Administration. Its funding sources include government compensation for its public service role, subscription-based news sales, and participation in European projects such as Iberifier, funded by the European Commission and linked to the European Digital Media Observatory (EDMO). EFE Verifica also collaborates with Meta (for fact-checking on Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp), Microsoft’s Democracy Forward Initiative, and Google’s YouTube monetization programs.

Analysis / Bias

EFE Verifica applies a transparent and methodical process based on accuracy, independence, and ethical journalism. It explicitly avoids labeling claims as “true” or “false,” instead providing contextual analysis as seen in this methodology page. Articles such as “UNICEF has not published any report proving that there has been no famine in Gaza” demonstrate strict adherence to primary sources, quoting UNICEF Spain directly to correct misinformation spread by Jewish News Syndicate (JNS).

Another example, “A video does not show an attack on a Muslim woman for having her arms uncovered in Antwerp”, verifies events through local police and reputable Belgian media (HLN, PZC). Similarly, “It is false that there is financial aid for women who have abortions” dispels a conspiracy theory by citing Spanish government ministries and referencing Law 40/2003. These examples illustrate consistent reliance on official institutions, rejection of loaded language, and avoidance of sensationalism.

Its commitment to non-partisanship is reinforced by its membership in both the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN) and the European Fact-Checking Standards Network (EFCSN). Annual independent audits verify compliance with standards for transparency, accuracy, and fairness. EFE’s editorial independence from political, religious, or economic pressures is further safeguarded by its autonomous Editorial Board.
