Down in the Country is a nonprofit news publication based in Oriental, North Carolina. According to its about page, “Down in the County is a free visual publication that is emailed directly to readers weekly. The stories embrace the people, history and daily happenings of Pamlico County — “where the land and the sea meet the sky.

The Down in the Country subscribes to the standards of editorial independence adopted by the Institute for Nonprofit News, which currently has 450 members. The Institute for Nonprofit News (INN) is a consortium founded in 2009 to support nonprofit journalism focused on investigative and public service reporting.
