History

Founded in 2023, Demócrata is a Madrid-based digital newspaper specializing in parliamentary information, created “to promote the reader’s right to receive truthful information” within the framework of executive and legislative activity. According to their about page, the outlet upholds the constitutional principles of the 1978 Spanish Constitution and adopts “the duty of truthfulness in reporting” as its guiding principle, publishing a Code of Ethics, a Governance and Transparency policy, and a Labeling Policy for sponsored content.

The outlet was launched by David Córdova, founder of the public affairs (lobbying) consultancy Vinces, and directed by veteran journalist Pilar Velasco until 2026. The editorial team is drawn from established Spanish outlets such as elEconomista, RTVE, and ElPlural. At launch, industry trade press such as PRNoticias raised concerns that pairing a public affairs consultancy with a parliamentary news outlet was “prone to permanent conflict of interest.”

Funded by / Ownership

Demócrata is owned by Información y Participación S.L., headquartered at Fortuny 45, Madrid, whose principal shareholder is David Córdova, founder of the lobbying firm Vinces Consulting. Revenue is generated through advertising, subscriptions, events, and sponsored content, including industry-funded sector sections “supported by” Farmaindustria (pharma lobby), La Caixa, Sedigas (gas lobby), and DigitalES, as well as the paid “DemócrataPRO” service. Sponsorships are disclosed under the site’s governance code.

Analysis / Bias

Demócrata reports on Spanish parliamentary activity, legislation, elections, and polling with minimally loaded language. Headlines are frequently quote-driven, such as Sánchez pide perdón por la corrupción y descarta elecciones: “¿Cómo no vamos a continuar?” (Sánchez apologizes for corruption and rules out elections: “How can we not continue?”). While emotionally loaded wording appears in headlines, it is attributed to the speaker rather than editorialized by the outlet. The article reports the Socialist Prime Minister’s defense at length while plainly stating adverse facts, such as the 24-year sentence handed to his former minister, and links prominently to opposition rebuttals such as Feijóo a Sánchez: “La corrupción es usted” (Feijóo to Sánchez: “You are the corruption”). Loaded language is generally confined to attributed quotes, and opinion is separated into a labeled section. However, articles rely heavily on internal links and embedded social media, with sparse hyperlinking to primary sources such as court rulings or official bulletins.

The most significant concern is sponsored sector coverage. The health section is “supported by” the pharmaceutical lobby Farmaindustria, and coverage of that organization is consistently favorable and press-release driven, such as Farmaindustria aplaude la nueva Agencia de Salud Pública (Farmaindustria applauds the new Public Health Agency), which relays the lobby’s positions without opposing viewpoints. Paid DemócrataPRO events sponsored by Farmaindustria have convened parliamentary health spokespersons to discuss legislation directly affecting the sponsor. While such content is generally labeled under the outlet’s labeling policy, the blending of lobbying interests with policy journalism is a transparency concern.
