History
DataCheck was launched on March 1, 2024, as the successor to the fact-checking division of DataCameroon, originally founded in 2017. Based in Douala and Yaoundé, Cameroon, DataCheck operates as an independent digital (“pure player”) organization dedicated to verifying information circulating in Cameroon and the Central African sub-region. It focuses on debunking false or manipulated images, videos, and text claims, especially those relating to politics, elections, and public discourse.

Funded by / Ownership
According to its funding page, DataCheck receives 90% of its financial support from ADISI-Cameroon, a civil society organization that promotes access to information and media transparency. The remaining 10% is funded by internal member contributions. It also receives technical support from Africa Check and CFI-Medias through training programs, such as Desinfox-Sahel. The site has affirmed its complete legal and financial independence since March 28, 2024, and explicitly denies any funding from the government or any political party.
Analysis / Bias
DataCheck adheres to the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN) standards and emphasizes impartiality in its methodology, instructing staff not to express personal opinions publicly. Its reports, such as “2025 Presidential Election: No, the image in circulation is not that of Issa Tchiroma Bakary’s meeting in Kousseri,” demonstrate transparent verification processes using reverse image search, InVid WeVerify, and open-source investigation techniques.
Another example, “2025 Presidential Election: When disinformation gets involved”, critically examines manipulated and AI-generated images used in political propaganda without promoting or defending any party. Coverage focuses on evidence-based debunking, uses neutral language, and cites credible sources, including official documents, journalists, and academic experts. There is no evidence of partisanship or ideological slant in either story selection or tone.
Failed Fact Checks
- None in the Last 5 years. They are an IFCN fact checker.
Overall, we rate DataCheck as Least Biased based on its strict adherence to IFCN fact-checking standards, neutral language, and evidence-driven reporting. We also rate them High for factual reporting due to transparent sourcing, strong methodological rigor, and the absence of failed fact checks or propaganda. (D. Van Zandt 10/22/2025)
