History
D.C. Witness is a nonprofit project that launched to bring transparency to Washington, D.C.’s criminal justice system. It tracks and reports every stage of violent crime cases—especially homicides, carjackings, stabbings, and shootings—through the D.C. Superior Court. The site’s core belief is that systemic reform can only happen through public access to complete and factual judicial data.

Analysis / Bias
D.C. Witness operates as a data-first, non-editorial news outlet. Reporters cover every criminal case, regardless of public interest or media appeal. Their reporting eschews emotional language and political framing, instead focusing solely on the factual recounting of legal proceedings.
For example:
- In “Defense Counsel Seeks Release for Homicide Defendant Facing Retrial”, the story neutrally summarizes the defense’s request and the judge’s response without opinion.
- In “Carjacking Defendant No-Show at Probation Revocation Hearing”, the report simply documents a court hearing outcome.
- The Data Explorer and “data playground” further reflect the organization’s commitment to transparency and neutrality.
In general, all information is factual as it relies on court documents.
