History
The Belarusian Investigative Center (BIC) is an independent investigative journalism project founded by exiled Belarusian journalists after the 2020 crackdown. Its team has won multiple “Free Word” awards from the Association of Journalists of Belarus between 2018 and 2022. In September 2023, the Belarusian Supreme Court declared BIC an “extremist organization,” forcing it to operate from abroad (Poland) under threat of persecution.

Funded by / Ownership
BIC is supported by international donors and grants, but its editorial policy stresses complete independence, rejecting funding tied to editorial influence. It is a member of the Global Investigative Journalism Network, the Poynter Institute’s International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN), the European Fact-Checking Standards Network, and the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP). The partners list reflects these affiliations.
Analysis / Bias
BIC publishes investigative reports and fact-checks, often exposing corruption, sanctions evasion, and propaganda. For example, its investigation into Petro Dyminskyy’s Belarusian business links detailed connections between Ukrainian oligarchs, Belarusian banks, and arms exports. Its Weekly Top Fake segment debunked Alfa Radio’s false claim that renewable energy caused European blackouts, citing data from the International Renewable Energy Agency and the Fraunhofer Institute showing that wind and solar are now cheaper than nuclear power.
The editorial policy emphasizes fact-checking, transparency, right of reply, and avoidance of hate speech, aligning with international journalism standards. BIC’s coverage tends to favor pro-democracy, anti-corruption, and human rights narratives, which gives it a Left-Center bias.
Failed Fact Checks
- No failed fact checks were found for BIC. On the contrary, it is a certified IFCN fact-checker and adheres to rigorous fact-checking standards.
