History

The American Jewish Committee, founded in 1906, is one of the oldest Jewish advocacy and civil-rights organizations in the United States. According to its own description on Who We Are, AJC “stands up for Israel,” combats antisemitism worldwide, and promotes democratic values. Historically, the group has engaged in broader civil-rights work, including filing an amicus brief in Brown v. Board of Education. AJC is widely regarded as a leading Jewish advocacy institution, described by The New York Times as “the dean of American Jewish organizations.”

The organization operates globally, collaborating with elected officials, diplomats, business leaders, and interfaith groups, and maintains offices in the U.S., Europe, Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East.

Funded by / Ownership

AJC is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, supported primarily through tax-deductible donations such as those solicited on its donation portal. The organization publishes annual IRS Form 990 filings, available directly on its Form 990 page. Funding transparency is strong; however, major individual donor identities are not publicly disclosed, which is typical for nonprofits.

According to InfluenceWatch, AJC engages in policy advocacy and maintains international influence networks. While AJC does not endorse candidates, political giving by individuals associated with the organization leans Democratic, reflected in OpenSecrets data, though this represents individual contributions rather than institutional action.

Analysis / Bias

AJC’s content consistently emphasizes defending Israel, combating antisemitism, and maintaining strong U.S.–Israel relations. This positioning is explicit in its mission on Who We Are and is reflected throughout its advocacy campaigns listed on Take Action, which include urging elected leaders to support Israel, counter antisemitism, preserve U.S. global leadership, and stand with Ukraine.

AJC’s podcasts and commentary incorporate an advocacy-driven tone. For example, the episode Erasing Jewish History argues that the removal of Chaim Herzog’s name from a Dublin park reflects a rising trend of anti-Zionist hostility targeting Jewish identity in Europe. The narrative is factually framed but expresses strong concern over global antisemitism, reflecting AJC’s civil-rights mandate rather than partisan political messaging.

Similarly, AJC’s policy commentary on U.S.–Israel relations contains measured but clear positions. The statement AJC Welcomes Trump Affirmation of U.S.-Israel Alliance praises President Trump’s reaffirmation of U.S. support for Israel while simultaneously criticizing his proposal to “take control” of Gaza. This illustrates an institutional focus on Israeli security interests rather than alignment with a particular U.S. political party. AJC routinely criticizes both Republican and Democratic administrations when policies conflict with its core objectives.

In general, AJC’s reporting and advocacy consistently rely on sourced statements, historical documentation, and diplomatic statements. Its bias reflects issue-based alignment with pro-Israel and anti-antisemitism positions rather than partisan influence. Strong sourcing, transparent operations, and cautious language contribute to a high factual rating.
