History

7NEWS is the national news service of Australia’s Seven Network. The Seven Network traces its television history to the 1950s, while 7NEWS.com.au was launched as a standalone digital news service in 2019. It covers Australian and international politics, breaking news, business, crime, health, sports, entertainment, and lifestyle.

7NEWS operates television newsrooms throughout Australia and maintains a national political bureau in Parliament House in Canberra. Ray Kuka has served as Director of News and Current Affairs since May 2025.

7NEWS is part of the Seven Network. In January 2026, Southern Cross Media Group completed its acquisition of Seven West Media, with Southern Cross acquiring all outstanding Seven West Media shares. The combined media company operates the Seven Network, 7NEWS.com.au, 7plus, LiSTNR, the Hit and Triple M radio networks, The West Australian, The Nightly, and other media properties.

Revenue is generated primarily through advertising, digital advertising, sponsorships, and other commercial media activities. Seven maintains a published Editorial Policy requiring accuracy, fairness, impartiality in news reporting, corrections of significant errors, and separation of editorial content from outside influence.

Analysis / Bias

7NEWS publishes original reporting as well as material from established wire services such as the Australian Associated Press (AAP) and Associated Press. Straight-news coverage generally uses conventional language, cites named officials and experts, and presents competing political perspectives.

A review of recent political coverage does not reveal a consistent preference for either Australia’s Labor Party or conservative parties. For example, during the 2025 federal election leaders’ debate, 7NEWS reported that its undecided audience preferred Labor leader Anthony Albanese overall but favored Coalition leader Peter Dutton on Indigenous issues and defense. The network reported the results without endorsing either candidate.

Some reporting is skeptical of conservative and populist-right policies. For example, Exclusive details of Coalition’s ‘Trumpian’ immigration policy revealed highlights criticism comparing a proposed Coalition immigration crackdown to Donald Trump’s policies. However, 7NEWS also provides extensive coverage of conservative arguments on immigration, crime, taxation, government spending, and cultural issues.

For example, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Labor’s plan for reduced migration prominently reports polling showing public support for reducing migration and refugee numbers. Similarly, coverage of Australian flag burning reports arguments for protecting the national flag alongside the government’s response.

7NEWS also provides substantial coverage of One Nation and Pauline Hanson, including interviews and detailed reporting on the party’s immigration and cultural policies. While some headlines characterize these policies critically, conservative and populist figures are regularly provided opportunities to explain their positions directly.

Regarding factual reporting, 7NEWS generally relies on professional journalists, named sources, government documents, and established news agencies. In 2024, the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) found that a promotional segment for 7NEWS Spotlight inaccurately described a smoking-cessation doctor as a representative of the tobacco industry. Seven removed the promotions and reminded staff of its accuracy obligations. However, a separate ACMA investigation into the accuracy and impartiality of a 7NEWS Perth broadcast found no breach.

In general, recent evidence indicates that 7NEWS is substantially more politically balanced than our previous review suggested. Individual programs, presenters, headlines, or stories may lean in different directions, but the overall news operation does not consistently favor either Australia’s left or right.

7NEWS Spotlight promotional material inaccurately portrayed a smoking-cessation doctor as a tobacco-industry representative — ACMA found a breach of accuracy requirements in 2024.
