MBFC’s Daily Vetted Fact Checks for 10/17/2026 (Weekend Edition)

Media Bias Fact Check selects and publishes fact checks from around the world. We only utilize fact-checkers that are either a signatory of the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN) or have been verified as credible by MBFC. Further, we review each fact check for accuracy before publishing. We fact-check the fact-checkers and let you know their bias. When appropriate, we explain the rating and/or offer our own rating if we disagree with the fact-checker. (D. Van Zandt)

FALSE Claim by Mike Collins (R): U.S. Sen. Jon Ossoff is “all for abortion up until and past birth.”

PolitiFact rating: False (Ossoff says he supports the abortion-rights framework established by Roe v. Wade, which protected abortion before fetal viability and allowed later abortions when the mother’s life or health was at risk. The legislation Collins cited did not authorize killing newborns, and infanticide is illegal in every state.)

GA Senate race: Mike Collins said Jon Ossoff backs abortion ‘up until and past birth.’ That’s False.

TRUE Claim via Social Media: U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., altered her birth year in official records from 1981 to 1982.

Snopes rating: True (According to The Washington Post, Omar said that requests to change her birth year were due to it being incorrect, not to cover up the truth. We found evidence to support that she was 17 in the year 2000.)

Did Ilhan Omar change her birth year in official records?

MISLEADING Claim by Tom Suozzi and Article One PAC: Mike LiPetri supports “gutting Medicare” and is “cheering on Trump’s attack on Medicare.”

FactCheck.org rating: Misleading (The ads provide no specific evidence beyond the broader Republican policy agenda, and the Medicare provisions in Trump’s major domestic policy law are comparatively limited rather than a wholesale gutting of the program.)

Democratic Ads Exaggerate GOP Law’s Impact on Medicare

FALSE (International: Philippines): Castro said President Marcos is a self-confessed drug user.

AFP Fact Check rating: False
