Illinois Press Association CEO Resigns Amid Legal Dispute Over Journalist Rights Lawsuit

Don Craven, CEO of the Illinois Press Association (IPA), resigned this week after a dispute with the organization’s board over a lawsuit aimed at protecting journalists’ First Amendment rights. Craven had added the IPA as a plaintiff in litigation against the Trump administration, which accuses ICE agents of violently targeting journalists during protests at a detention facility in Broadview, Illinois. The board disagreed and demanded IPA’s withdrawal from the suit, prompting Craven’s resignation. Plaintiffs in the suit include Block Club Chicago and the Chicago News Guild.
