MBFC’s Daily Vetted Fact Checks for 08/24/2025 (Weekend Edition)

Fact Check Search

Media Bias Fact Check selects and publishes fact checks from around the world. We only utilize fact-checkers that are either a signatory of the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN) or have been verified as credible by MBFC. Further, we review each fact check for accuracy before publishing. We fact-check the fact-checkers and let you know their bias. When appropriate, we explain the rating and/or offer our own rating if we disagree with the fact-checker. (D. Van Zandt)

BLATANT
LIE
Claim by Trump Admin: Between 70 million and 100 million people living in the U.S. are noncitizens.

AP Fact Check rating: False (Census Bureau data shows about 22 million noncitizens lived in the U.S. in 2023, including legal and undocumented residents. The widely shared 55 million visa figure includes millions of tourists and people outside the U.S., and the true undocumented population is closer to 14 million, not 25–30 million as Trump and social media posts have claimed.)

FACT FOCUS: Posts overestimate number of noncitizens living in US by tens of millions

Donald Trump Rating

MOSTLY
FALSE
Claim by JD Vance: “We had the biggest tax cut for families that this country has ever seen.”

PolitiFact rating: Mostly False (When factoring in that President Donald Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill extends 2017 tax cuts that otherwise would have expired — which tax experts say is a plausible way of characterizing it — then the tax savings from Trump’s 2025 law rank third on the list of biggest tax cut laws since 1980.)

Donald Trump’s ‘Big Beautiful’ spending law was not the ‘biggest tax cut’ in US history

BLATANT
LIE
Claim via Social Media: Texas “fired” Democratic U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett by redrawing its congressional districting map in August 2025.

Snopes rating: False (Crockett was not fired and remains in Congress as of this writing. The Constitution doesn’t authorize states to “fire” a member of Congress. Texas’ new map wouldn’t even effectively fire her; Crockett’s district was and remained heavily Democratic before and after redistricting.)

Did Texas ‘fire’ Jasmine Crockett by redrawing congressional map?

FALSE (International: Australia): Claim by Anthony Albanese: The coalition opposed three lots of energy bill relief.

AAP rating: False (While the coalition opposed reforms that enabled the first round of energy bill relief in 2022, they didn’t oppose the next two.)

Albanese’s claim coalition opposed all three rounds of energy bill relief is wrong
