Fact Check Search

Media Bias Fact Check selects and publishes fact checks from around the world. We only utilize fact-checkers that are either a signatory of the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN) or have been verified as credible by MBFC. Further, we review each fact check for accuracy before publishing. We fact-check the fact-checkers and let you know their bias. When appropriate, we explain the rating and/or offer our own rating if we disagree with the fact-checker. (D. Van Zandt)

BLATANT
LIE
Claim via Social Media: Gavin Newsom and his wife created Cal Volunteers to steal money raised by FireAid

Lead Stories rating: False (Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, not Newsom, created California Volunteers, also known as Cal Volunteers, in 2006. FireAid, which was organized to help victims of the Los Angeles fires in January 2025, has listed the California Volunteer Fund as a potential recipient of a grant, but it is a separate organization and Newsom and his wife have no role with it.)

Fact Check: Gavin Newsom And His Wife Did NOT Create Cal Volunteers To Steal Money Raised For Fire Victims

MOSTLY
TRUE
Claim by Ritchie Torres (D): “Since Donald Trump’s inauguration, we have seen an 11% decline in the value of the dollar, the steepest decline in more than a half a century.”

PolitiFact rating: Mostly True (Financial research firm Morningstar says the standard metric for measuring the dollar’s strength against other currencies dropped by 11% in the first half of 2025, the biggest decline for a first half of the year since 1973. Donald Trump was president for most of that six-month period, but not all of it.)

Has the dollar just had its biggest decline in 50 years?

BLATANT
LIE
Claim by Seth Gruber: Having an abortion increases a woman’s risk of breast cancer.

AFP Fact Check rating: False (Leading cancer and gynecological organizations say studies of health outcomes for participants tracked over many years concluded the procedure does not contribute to subsequent disease risk.)

Misinformation about abortion safety spreads via US podcast

FALSE (International: Vietnam): There was no autism in Vietnam before 2001.

Full Fact rating: False (Autism exists worldwide, but it was not recognised in Vietnam until the late 1990s. Some Vietnamese people born in the 20th century have autism.)
