Fact vs. Fiction: Was Luis Leon, an 82-Year-Old Green Card Holder, Deported by ICE to Guatemala?

Misleading Fact Check.

Claim via Social Media and The Morning Call:

Luis Leon, an 82-year-old Chilean man living in Pennsylvania, was arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) while trying to replace his green card and subsequently deported to Guatemala.

Explanation:

This claim is Unverified. A report by The Morning Call cited Leon’s family, who said ICE agents detained him at a Philadelphia USCIS office on June 20, 2025. They claimed he later resurfaced in a hospital in Guatemala, suffering from pneumonia.

However, ICE told The Morning Call it had not deported Leon and that an internal investigation was underway. The Department of Homeland Security said it had no record of Leon’s June 20 appointment. The Guatemalan Migration Institute also reported that no entry matching his name, age, or nationality was found, and stated that it does not coordinate deportations for South American nationals.

While Leon’s family reported locating him in Guatemala, the circumstances of his arrival there remain unclear. Leon’s name does not appear in ICE’s Online Detainee Locator, though removals are typically delisted after deportation. Snopes and ICE have been unable to verify the sequence of events or the alleged deportation independently.

Conclusion:

Fact or Fiction? Unverified. There is no official confirmation that ICE deported Luis Leon. The claim remains based solely on family testimony without supporting government or immigration documentation.

How is rhe claim “misleading”? It may be unverified, but it’s either true or not true, not “misleading.”

I wouldn’t believe anything that ICE or DHS says, nor the Guatemalan government.

The fact that this article cites either one and doesn’t qualify them as extremely unreliable sources speaks volumes about Mediabias/FactCheck’s cresibikity/honesty and reliability, or lack thereof..
