Canada Urged to Strengthen Press Freedom Protections

Reporters Without Borders (RSF) called on Canadian policymakers to adopt urgent reforms to maintain and enhance the country’s strong press freedom reputation. Hearst TV Wins Dismissal of Video Privacy Lawsuit

A federal judge dismissed a lawsuit against Hearst TV that accused the company of violating the Video Privacy Protection Act by allegedly sharing app users’ video-viewing data with Google and Braze. Judge Richard Stearns ruled that the plaintiff, Charles Therrien, failed to demonstrate that the shared data was personally identifiable. The ruling found that a single shared geolocation point and an Android advertising ID were insufficient to reasonably identify Therrien, ultimately siding with Hearst on all major points. RSF has documented the extensive efforts by President Donald Trump to undermine press freedom during and after his presidency. Key figures include over 8,000 government web pages removed, public media cuts threatening 180 radio stations, and at least 64 disparaging remarks made against journalists on his social platform, Truth Social.
