MBFC’s Daily Vetted Fact Checks for 09/08/2024 (Weekend Edition)

Media Bias Fact Check selects and publishes fact checks from around the world. We only utilize fact-checkers that are either a signatory of the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN) or have been verified as credible by MBFC. Further, we review each fact check for accuracy before publishing. We fact-check the fact-checkers and let you know their bias. When appropriate, we explain the rating and/or offer our own rating if we disagree with the fact-checker. (D. Van Zandt)

MOSTLY
FALSE
Claim by Josh Stein (D): “Mark Robinson skips Board of Education vote on teacher bonuses to hold campaign event.”

Politifact rating: Mostly False (The state Board of Education held a meeting Thursday. Robinson, who had a campaign event scheduled for the same time, participated remotely. Robinson, along with the rest of the board, voted to send that report to state legislators.)

Claim by Barbara O’Neill: Oral contraceptive pills are “the number one” cause of polycystic ovary syndrome; a combination of wild yam and castor oil can cure polycystic ovary syndrome and uterine fibroids.

Health Feedback rating: Inaccurate (Oral birth control doesn’t cause polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). In fact, it can be used to mitigate PCOS symptoms. Available clinical data so far doesn’t support using wild yam or castor oil to treat polycystic ovary syndrome and uterine fibroids.)

BLATANT
LIE
Claim by Donald Trump (R): “The transgender thing is incredible… your kid goes to school and comes home a few days later with an operation. The school decides what’s going to happen with your child.”

PolitiFact rating: Pants on Fire (Except in emergencies, schools do not provide medical care without parental consent. Gender-affirming surgery on minors is rare. Laws and professional standards require  parents and medical providers to be involved in those decisions.)
