(Media News) Report Finds Growing Use of AI in News, But Trust Issues Persist

A new report from the Reuters Institute reveals global perceptions of generative AI in news. Surveying people in Argentina, Denmark, France, Japan, the U.K., and the U.S., the study shows that most believe AI is currently used in journalism and will continue to impact the industry.

On average, respondents think journalists “always” or “sometimes” use AI with human oversight for various tasks, including writing articles, creating images, data analysis, copyediting, and writing headlines. Looking ahead, 66% expect AI to have a significant impact on the news media.

However, perceptions of AI’s impact on news are mostly negative. While respondents are comfortable with AI in basic tasks like copyediting (+38%) and translation (+35%), fewer are comfortable with AI writing headlines (+16) or producing multimedia (+15). Comfort levels drop for core tasks like writing articles (-1%), generating images (-13%), and creating personas (-24%).

Comfort also varies by topic, with higher acceptance in fashion, sports, and arts, and lower in international affairs and politics. Only 8% believe AI-generated news is worth paying for, and 33% think it is cheaper to produce. Trust in AI-generated news is low, with news media seen as one of the least trusted industries to use AI responsibly.
