(Media News) David D. Smith Acquires Baltimore Sun, Promising Local Focus Amid Concerns Over Conservative Influence

David D. Smith, executive chairman of Sinclair Inc., has acquired Baltimore Sun Media from Alden Global Capital, returning local ownership to Maryland’s largest newspaper for the first time in nearly four decades. The deal includes the Baltimore Sun, Capital Gazette, Carroll County Times, and other local publications. Smith’s purchase, made personally and not under Sinclair’s umbrella, aims to focus more on local news, technology integration, and community issues.

Sinclair Inc., known for its conservative-leaning television stations and local news programming, has faced criticism for infusing right-wing perspectives into its broadcasts. Smith, an active backer of conservative causes, including Project Veritas, has asserted his commitment to unbiased, public-interest journalism. However, his connection to conservative politics, including his partnership with Armstrong Williams, a conservative commentator, has raised concerns about the potential ideological direction of the Baltimore Sun under his ownership.

Smith criticized mainstream media for neglecting broad public issues and pledged to address problems and corruption in government through the Sun. His approach includes more local and investigative reporting, enhanced use of video and social media, and technological advancements in news delivery. He plans to meet with the Sun’s staff to discuss the future vision and operations of the publications.

Despite the promise of local ownership and Smith’s assurance of journalistic integrity, there are fears that the Sun may lean towards conservative viewpoints, mirroring Sinclair’s broadcast approach. Baltimore Sun Media, with a history of 16 Pulitzer Prizes and over 230,000 subscribers, holds a significant place in Maryland’s journalistic landscape.
