The Latest Fact Checks curated by Media Bias Fact Check 06/13/2022

Each day Media Bias Fact Check selects and publishes fact checks from around the world. We only utilize fact-checkers that are either a signatory of the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN) or have been verified as credible by MBFC. Further, we review each fact check for accuracy before publishing. We fact-check the fact-checkers and let you know their bias. When appropriate, we explain the rating and/or offer our own rating if we disagree with the fact-checker. (D. Van Zandt)

FALSE Claim via Social Media: Joe Biden approved a “new card” that “gives free health insurance to Americans” who are 25 and older.

Politifact rating: False (Some Americans do qualify for federal subsidies to help them pay for health insurance plans, but there isn’t a magic free health insurance card forthcoming.)

Sorry, free health insurance for Americans 25 and older is not a reality

BLATANT
LIE
Claim via Social Media: Guns are illegal in Chicago.

Check Your Fact rating: False (While Chicago has strict gun laws, they are not illegal to own in the city.)

FACT CHECK: Are Guns Illegal In Chicago?

FALSE Claim by Townhall and National Pulse: “Countries with high levels of mask compliance did not perform better than those with low mask usage”; “Mask Mandates [are] Associated With Increased Covid Death Rate”

Health Feedback rating: Incorrect (Articles claiming that mask-wearing worsens COVID-19 and causes more deaths are based on two flawed ecological studies that don’t provide evidence supporting such claims. The articles also cherry-picked these two studies without considering the body of evidence that supports the use of masks to prevent infections and deaths.)

Scientific evidence shows that mask-wearing is effective at limiting community transmission; claims that face masks increase mortality are based on flawed correlation studies

Townhall Rating, National Pulse Rating

FALSE Claim via Social Media: “Gavin Newsom reportedly intervened at the request of Nancy Pelosi and directly ordered the California Highway Patrol to drop all charges” against Paul Pelosi for his DUI arrest.

Politifact rating: False (Charges have not been filed in the arrest, and the case remains under review by the Napa County District Attorney’s Office. The highway patrol does not have the ability to file or dismiss charges, and Gov. Gavin Newsom has no involvement in Pelosi’s case.)

Charges haven’t been dismissed against Paul Pelosi because they haven’t been filed

FALSE Claim by Viral Image: Claims Maricopa County in Arizona accepted 18,000 ballots after Election Day in 2020.

Check Your Fact rating: False (The document included in the post is a transfer of custody document between Maricopa County and Runbeck Elections Services, according to election officials. All of these ballots were received on or before Election Day, not after.)

FACT CHECK: Did Maricopa County Accept 18,000 Ballots After Election Day?

FALSE (International: Australia): The Arctic sea ice extent is at a 30-year high.

Australian Associated Press rating: False (The Arctic sea ice extent has been greater at several points in recent years and data over 30 years shows a significant downward trend.)

Arctic sea ice claim sinks under weight of evidence
