History

Euronews is a European multilingual news media service, headquartered in Lyon, France. Created in 1993, it aims to cover world news from a pan-European perspective. According to their about page they disclaim that they report from a pro-EU perspective “As a media with a strong European and multicultural DNA, Euronews is a widely recognized and trusted brand.”

Funded by / Ownership

Euronews is jointly owned by several European and North African state broadcasting organizations, and since 2015 majority-owned (53%) by Media Globe Networks led by Egyptian billionaire Naguib Sawiris who is chairman of the supervisory board. NBC Universal also holds a 25% stake. Revenue is derived from advertising and subscription fees. Euronews also receives 24.5 million dollars in subsidies from the European Union.

Analysis / Bias

In review, Euronews publishes European and International news often paring text and video from the TV station. News stories use minimal loaded biased language such as this: Drone attacks cause fires and explosions at Saudi oil refineries. This story is appropriately sourced through video, tweets and Reuters. The website also publishes news from AFP, AP and NBC News.

In general, news reporting is neutral and factual, while editorial content has a leftward tilt. For example, in this article they support workers rights, Policymakers should better protect outdoor workers from the sun and in this article they accept the consensus on climate change and advocate for the worker, Climate-friendly policies can succeed in Europe – but not at the expense of workers. When it comes to Brexit, Euronews typically reports negatively. Further, op-eds typically report negatively on USA President Donald Trump as well, such as this: Twitter diplomacy: The “Money Heist” of Trump’s Foreign Policy.

Euronews has been accused of Anti-Russia bias by the Questionable RT News. They have also been accused of significant pro-EU bias.

A factual search reveals they have not failed a fact check.

Overall, we rate Euronews Least Biased based on well sourced neutral news reporting. Although there is a slight to moderate left lean in editorial content, it represents a small portion of the website, therefore we place them at the farthest left point of Least Biased. We also rate them High for factual reporting due to proper sourcing and a clean fact check record. (D. Van Zandt 7/31/2016) Updated (9/14/2019)
