Benjamin Netanyahu was unable to form a ruling coalition late Wednesday night, just seven weeks after national elections. He becomes the first elected prime minister in Israeli history to stumble in forging a working government, after a powerful potential coalition partner broke away.
As the clock struck midnight on Netanyahu, Israel appeared headed for a September election.
