Funded by / Ownership

The New European was formerly owned by Archant. In February 2021, it was announced that a consortium including founder Matt Kelly, media executive Mark Thompson, and former Financial Times editor Lionel Barber had acquired the newspaper. In July 2022, The New European Ltd completed a co-ownership scheme, raising more than £1m from more than 2,000 individual investors, who collectively own 16.7% of the company. Revenue is generated through subscriptions and a store that sells back issues of the paper and merchandise.

Analysis / Bias

The New European offers pro-European in-depth analysis of the Brexit process, its implications, and progress, as well as celebrating European life. This suggests a bias towards pro-European Union views and against Brexit. Articles and headlines often use loaded emotional language that favors the left like this Want to live with your parents forever? Then vote Tory. This story lacks hyperlinked sourcing.

Editorially, most opinion pieces favor the left and denigrate the right, such as Free-market capitalism made us sick. Now Labour must prioritise wellbeing, and Yes, Hunt IS gaslighting us all. In general, the New European favors the Labour Party and holds progressive viewpoints.
