South Africa Government and Media
World Press Freedom Rank: South Africa 31/180 (2019)
According to Reporters without borders “Press freedom is guaranteed but fragile” in South Africa.
Government Influence on Media: The Government does not directly subsidizes the media, however in 2003, the Government established The Media Development and Diversity Agency (MDDA) in order to assist major print and broadcasting companies by providing grants. Additionally, all the large daily newspapers are owned by the four largest media firms, which could lead to pro-corporate bias.
