History
The Slovenian Press Agency (STA) is Slovenia’s national news agency, publishing news on its official website. According to its About the Agency page, STA began operating on June 20, 1991, shortly before Slovenia’s declaration of independence, replacing reliance on the former Yugoslav news agency. The agency is mandated by law to provide continuous, comprehensive, accurate, and objective information to the public in both Slovenian and English. STA employs more than 80 journalists and maintains domestic and international correspondents, including bureaus in Brussels, Zagreb, and New York.

Funded by / Ownership
As stated on the About the Agency page, STA is a limited liability company that is 100% owned by the Slovenian state, with its public-service role regulated by a special law enacted in 2011. Funding comes from a mixed model consisting of state compensation for its legally required public-service mission and commercial revenue. Commercial income is generated through paid subscriptions, licensing, and the sale of individual news items, photo, video, and radio services.
Analysis / Bias
STA operates as a traditional wire service rather than an opinion or commentary outlet. Reporting is written in a neutral, factual tone with clear attribution to officials and institutions, and articles avoid emotionally loaded language or ideological framing.
For example, Slovenia favours provisional application of EU-Mercosur deal, Golob says reports statements made by Prime Minister Robert Golob at an EU summit, focusing on what was said and the diplomatic context without offering editorial judgment. Similarly, Police declare two security-risk areas under Šutar law explains the legal framework and conditions under which police may exercise expanded powers, emphasizing procedural details rather than political advocacy.
Story selection reflects STA’s role as Slovenia’s national news provider, prioritizing government actions, public safety, foreign affairs, and economic developments relevant to both domestic and international audiences.
