History
Poll Vault is a U.S. political polling and election-analysis newsletter launched in October 2026 by Sean Trende, Senior Elections Analyst at RealClearPolitics. According to its About page, Poll Vault covers politics, elections, history, polling, and related subjects and is published as a RealClearPolitics newsletter.
Trende has served as RealClearPolitics’ Senior Elections Analyst since 2010. He holds a Ph.D. in political science and a master’s degree in applied statistics from Ohio State University, as well as a law degree and master’s degree in political science from Duke University and a bachelor’s degree from Yale University. He also teaches political science at Ohio State University and serves as a visiting scholar at the American Enterprise Institute.
Poll Vault launched shortly before the 2026 midterm elections with the stated purpose of helping readers interpret polling averages, electoral history, district-level results, and polling uncertainty rather than simply reinforcing prevailing campaign narratives.

Funded by / Ownership
Poll Vault is published on Substack as a RealClearPolitics newsletter written primarily by Sean Trende. RealClearPolitics is the flagship publication of RealClear Media Group and was co-founded by Tom Bevan and John McIntyre. RCP employs Trende as its Senior Elections Analyst and publishes political reporting, polling averages, election analysis, and commentary.
Poll Vault offers both free and paid subscriptions through Substack. The newsletter does not prominently disclose a separate legal entity or independent funding structure, suggesting it operates as an editorial product associated with RealClearPolitics rather than as a standalone news organization.
Analysis / Bias
Poll Vault generally takes a nonpartisan approach to election analysis. Trende frequently challenges narratives favorable to both Democrats and Republicans and emphasizes historical context, polling uncertainty, sample error, and the limits of interpreting individual surveys or early voting data. Although Trende is affiliated with the right-leaning American Enterprise Institute and RealClearPolitics has a modest conservative orientation, Poll Vault itself does not consistently promote Republican candidates or conservative policy positions.
For example, What Might a Miss Look Like? examines possible polling errors in both directions. Trende explicitly considers scenarios in which polls could be underestimating Republicans as well as scenarios in which they could be underestimating Democrats, while cautioning that explanations for polling errors can reflect analysts’ own biases.
Similarly, For the Love of God, Please Don’t Overinterpret Early Voting warns against drawing strong partisan conclusions from early-voting numbers because of changes in voting behavior, turnout patterns, and data limitations. The article critiques analysts generally rather than targeting one political party.
In Level-Setting 2026, Part I: The House, Trende explains that even relatively modest Democratic seat gains could represent an historically strong election given the structure of the current congressional map. The analysis relies on historical election results and polling averages rather than partisan advocacy, even though the conclusion favors Democrats’ current position.
Factual standards appear strong. Poll Vault relies heavily on RealClearPolitics polling averages, historical election results, district partisanship, demographic data, and established polling organizations. Trende also openly discusses uncertainty and methodological weaknesses rather than presenting electoral forecasts as certain outcomes. The primary limitation is the publication’s very short track record, which prevents a longer-term assessment of accuracy and editorial consistency.
