Analysis / Bias

OnCuba News covers various topics pertinent to Cuba and its relationship with the United States, from politics and economy to culture and sports. Examples include cultural articles like “Keep an eye on the viewer: The Cuban photos of Josep Vicent Rodríguez,” which features a column showcasing the artistic journey of photographer Josep Vicent Rodríguez, and economic articles such as “Cuba in 2023: The Year That Could Not Be and the Year That Was.” The latter uses dramatic language to describe Cuba’s economic challenges, framing them in a negative light without detailed evidence or balanced perspectives. Phrases such as  “recognized inefficiencies” and “chronic lack of foreign currency” carry a negative connotation, emphasize the severity of the situation, and frame the narrative around ongoing systemic failures. Statements such as “practically nothing is saved when we take stock of what happened” provide a sweeping, negative judgment without detailed evidence, reflecting the author’s subjective view. Additionally, circular referencing (internally linking to itself)limits the diversity of perspectives, which can further bias the reader’s understanding of the issues discussed.

Similarly, the article “The dollar maintains its fall in the informal market and looks at the 300 peso barrier” employs emotionally loaded language and limited external references, relying mainly on sources like El Toque. The narrative frames the dollar’s depreciation in the informal market as a significant economic event, hinting at deeper issues without detailed analysis or balanced viewpoints.

Regarding bias, OnCuba News holds a left-leaning bias, which is evident in articles such as:

  1. “Cuba-United States: Biden’s third year”:
    • This article critically assesses President Biden’s policies, emphasizing a lack of significant changes and expressing disappointment in unmet expectations. It suggests a preference for more progressive actions.
  2. “Cuban-American organizations ask Biden to reverse Cuba policies established by Trump administration”:
    • The article emphasizes the negative impact of Trump’s policies and advocates for their reversal, aligning with a left-leaning viewpoint critical of conservative approaches.

Both articles suggest a preference for engagement and humanitarian support over stricter sanctions, and the critical views of conservative politicians like Marco Rubio further support this assessment.

In general, OnCuba News favors policies that promote engagement and support for Cuba while being critical of conservative approaches emphasizing sanctions and isolation. The platform’s poor sourcing practices, often relying on limited external references and circular citations, affect the depth and reliability of its reporting.
